Basse-Corse

Corsica is an island just off the south coast of France and is divided into two parts: Corse du Sud and Haute Corse. Interestingly Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island, which was ceded to France by Genoa in 1768. Corsica is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea and the area is about 8,680 km² containing approximately 272,000 inhabitants. Historically, the island was very significant and was seen as a platform for military operations in the period of conflicts between France and Italy.
The entire island of Corsica is mountainous and has a natural park (Parc Naturel Régional de Corse), which protects thousands of rare animal and plant species. The regional capital is Ajaccio where tourism, like the rest of Corsica, is very important but has many other activities such as manufacturing, fishing, timbering, shipping, and fruit-growing industries. It’s a popular destination thanks to its warm climate, its interesting rugged landscape and its stunning sea views. Tourism is particularly concentrated on the area around Porto Vecchio and Calvi in the west of the island, and Bonifacio in the south.
Culturally, Corsican people are proud and independent from the rest of France: the official language is French but Corsicans also have their dialect similar to Italian. Politically, Corsica is governed as a région of France, though there are significant local movements calling for greater autonomy or independence even though a referendum in 2003 voted against it by a narrow margin. Characterised by the thriving port capital of Bastia – with its classic Italianate style buildings - and Calvi, where Nelson lost his eye, the north is less crowded with its smaller, hidden beaches. Bastia is the island's largest city and chief commercial centre and was the capital until 1791 where it used to be a fort for Genoeses with many of its remaining old buildings attracting large numbers of visitors each
